Genesis 6:4 ---There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

So, most scholars say they sort of believe that large angelic 'beings' married common women, and the above verse does say children were born of that union that were mighty men. Yet, what if the 'sons of God' were those who followed God (which sort of makes sense, and we know that followers of God don't always do well with following Him), and perhaps the daughters of men were daughters of mighty men. It could be that there were not just giant men, but also giant women. It says the thoughts of men were only evil continually, and if they saw these huge powerful women ---well, it perhaps was that the 'common' man was not so concerned with all the virtues of compatibility. (And the Bible verse says there were Nephilim in the land before that and afterwards ---so, perhaps giants mated with giants beforehand, and the sons of God decided to get into the act, an already evil giant clan being not so concerned, and perhaps saw some benefit with it, perhaps having to agree to a dowry of substance or perhaps servitude to the giants (the giants could then relax and nod off in the land of Nod), or perhaps were just a bit entertained.

And another thing, if it were angels taking common human wives, as many as they desired, then what would be left for the common man? And though it doesn't say, it does say that his thoughts were only evil continually. Though I find it difficult to see it this way, as God would have seemingly permitted the sabotage of His initial plan for the beauty of marriage, and its purpose. (Yet, I'm just trying to think this through. I am in no way questioning God's wisdom ...just questioning a bit of your wisdom as to how you interpret what we both don't know for sure. Sorry, not trying to challenge ...yet, I do try to understand God, and I don't think He faults me for that.)

This sort of fits in with my belief that no way did the evolution of humans take place. I don't believe God started with wild creatures, including humans, and then later domesticated them. I believe in Creation, a miraculous Creation in the image of God, given guidance and a pure standard, then sin tainting that, yet the initial standard always remaining (that they could return to, turning away from sin).

And the Flood during Noah's time destroyed all but the eight of them ...and we see giants afterwards also. So many take the opinion that angels did the same thing after the Flood as they did before, so the punishment seemed not to affect the angels, unless it is believed that angels continue to go against God. Though again, it is noted that in the Book of Job permission had to be given ----and I find it hard to believe God would give permission to the angels to repeat such an act if He felt it was consequential to destroy the entire earth in the Flood. In the book, 'Hard Sayings of the Bible', one of the scholars said that if the angels had done such an evil, why not flood the heavens instead. Or simply revoke the permission (which I don't believe existed in the first place.)

The Bible says there were 'giants' in the land. And the most famous story is after the Flood, with Goliath. Samson was approximately 40 years older than Goliath, but though Samson was blessed by God, he was not without his many faults. He had a girlfriend named Delilah who was from the evil nation of the Philistines. And power often corrupts, even within a group of good people (we see this in the fictional story of 'Lord of the Rings', but also in the true story of the Bible). And Samson seemed to, for a time, fit in with the Philistines. And how does that happen? Well, it usually requires compromise ...and giving up things one should not give up. (Compromise can be good if you give up selfish things as a sacrifice to lovingly benefit another ---but not if the 'other' stands against God. You can still approach it lovingly, but not by compromising God's Word.)

There are many different ways we can look at 'men of renown'. Most Bible scholars seem to prefer seeing these men during Noah's time as giant men. Yet, men of renown in our recent history who were also considered 'evil', well, the list could include: Mao (under 6 ft.); Hitler (5'9"); Stalin (even shorter); Napoleon (shorter yet). So, it could be said that these men of renown were not tall at all, and some relatively short. But, they lived at a time when people were not large, but evil was 'at large'. Could we call those like Hitler, a mighty man because he had a mighty army?? And perhaps the giants, though being very large and having a huge head, perhaps didn't use their brains efficiently, and the Napoleon-type became their leader, men of renown being those with strategic brains. And though I don't believe this to be the way it was, I would say it can stand as well as the theory (and perhaps better) of giants being the progeny of angels. And honestly, I don't believe that ...I believe rather that there were giants already in the earth, just like I believe God created blue eyes and brown eyes. And though there could have been a jolly green giant, the acceptance factor may have favored being popular by having the ability to do things that those of your same group was doing (peer pressure and acceptance), as also Samson was likely strong as a giant (or stronger), and was seemingly accepted at first and was tempted by a deceptive woman, Delilah, who was a Philistine at heart. So, the size and strength does not make one evil, but it often works to compromise one's desires and also becomes a target for manipulation ---as Delilah willingly allowed herself to be used for this purpose. Samson's heart went astray, but it seemed the blinders came off when he became blind ...and he repented, turning back to God.

*******************************************************

The point is, size does not make a person one way or another. If you are over 7-feet tall, it may influence your choice whether you play handball or basketball, but it does not dictate whether you follow God, or not. We read that there were Nephilim before the Flood and we read specifically of Goliath after the Flood, yet also before that of a clan of giants living among the Philistines. The general way of the Philistines was evil, so living among them would be difficult to also not be evil. Samson was not evil, yet we see what they did to him so he couldn't see. Though I feel he saw truth more clearly without his eyes.

******************************************************

Yes, many Philistines cheered Goliath when he stood as their hero. He was the strength of their evil. But Samson's strength was not in their favor, so they tried to use it in their favor. The evil was the Philistine way, not the strength coming from 'size' ...had Goliath repented, they would have tricked him just like they did Samson.
